What are the rules for traveling with your dog?
Metro, bus, tram… Taking public transport with your dog can be complicated when you don’t know the rules to follow. Please note that there are special conditions, depending on the size of your companion and the transport company.
In France, each public transport company has its own rules for traveling with your dog.
Are dogs allowed on public transport?
It’s important to remember that all guide or assistance dogs are permit accompany their owners on all public transport, regardless of size or race. When traveling, commanders must carry one of these documents with them:
- a disability card,
- a priority card,
- an educator card,
- of a map of “Host family”
- the certificate of identification of the dog.
In Île-de-France, most public transport (bus, metro, RER or tram) is managed by the RATP. Authorize the access of pets (dog, cat and NAC) under certain conditions. The same goes for other major French cities such as Lyon and Marseille.
Everywhere in France, 1st and 2nd category dogs, such as the Rottweiler or the Mastiff, are prohibited In public transport.

What are the conditions for taking public transport with your dog?
In Paris, dogs are accepted by the RATP depending on their size and the means of transport used. To be accepted on the bus, funicular, metro, RER and tram in Paris, small dogs, such as dachshunds, pugs or even French bulldogs, must be enclosed in boxes, bags or transport baskets.
Since June 2016, large and medium-sized dogs, such as the Border Collie, Collie or Great Dane, have been allowed to travel on the Metro and RER. They must be kept on a leash and muzzled. However, they are still barred from buses.
The TCL network in Lyon admits small dogs when they travel in properly closed kennels. Dogs weighing more than 6 kg must be kept on a lead and muzzled.
Information on public transport in Marseille: Dogs and pets are generally prohibited on all RTM networks. However, it is possible to derogate from this prohibition. In fact, small dogs not listed in the official classification of dangerous animals are allowed if transported in boxes, bags or closed cages and installed on the lap of the person carrying them.
As regards guide dogs for the blind or assistance dogs, they must be equipped with a harness and leash (longer than 80 cm). They are, however, exempt from wearing a muzzle. When a guide dog is not equipped with a harness or work jacket, the guided or assisted person must be able to justify the presence of the dog.
In other cities of France, it is necessary to refer to the regulations put in place by the transport companies.

What is the price of public transport for dog?
In Paris, since November 2019, the metro and RER are free for all “big” and “small” dogs.
To access the TCL Lyon network with his dog, the owner must pay for a “Waf” transport ticket and be in possession of a certificate, including the dog’s identification number and the name of the companion(s).

To travel on the Marseille RTM network, owners of small dogs must have a transport ticket worth €1.70 one way for the metro and €2 one way for the bus.
Assistance, rescue and police dogs are allowed everywhere free of charge.
