There are many allies to remove stains from a carpet: most of them are found in our kitchen cabinets!
#Baking soda and vinegar
If you’re a fan of natural cleaning solutions, you’re already 100% familiar with the formula: vinegar and baking soda. This popular duo proves very effective at getting rid of most carpet stains. The results are satisfactory thanks to the foaming chemical reaction that eliminates dirt.
Ingredients :
- sodium bicarbonate
- vinegar
- essential oil (optional)
Instructions :
- Start by sprinkling a generous amount of baking soda on the stains. The white powder should completely cover the problem areas. Leave on for about 1 hour or, ideally, overnight.
- For an extra deodorizing note, mix the food grade abrasive with a few drops of colorless essential oil.
- Then, gradually pour the vinegar (about 1 tablespoon) over the baking soda.
- With a stiff bristle brush, massage the solution into the carpet. Leave for a few hours (about 5 or more).
- Finally, vacuum the treated areas.
The mix of vinegar and baking soda is well known to all
#Vinegar and water
This solution works great with steam cleaning. So, to determine the exact ratio of the two ingredients, you need to know if the carpet is made of synthetic or natural materials.
Ingredients and proportions:
- For a natural carpet (e.g. wool) – equal parts vinegar and water
- For synthetic carpets: 1 part vinegar to 2 parts water
Instructions :
- Mix the two ingredients.
- Pour the mixture into the steam cleaner.
- Clean the carpet according to the instructions of the device.
- Give the carpet time to dry.
Clue to know if the carpet is natural or synthetic: turn the carpet: most synthetic models are hard, while those made from natural materials are soft on both sides.
You can also opt for a treatment with diluted vinegar without baking soda.
#Corn starch and borax
The following formula is ideal for preparing a natural dry cleanser.
Ingredients :
- cornmeal – 1/2 cup
- cornstarch – 1/2 cup
- baking soda – 2 cups

- cinnamon – 1 tbsp. c.
- sodium salt (borax) – 1 tbsp. to s.
Instructions :
- Blend all the ingredients in a food processor until you get a very fine powder.
- Sprinkle the preparation on the carpet. For better absorption, it is recommended to use a hand brush for application. Let sit overnight.
- Finally, vacuum the carpet.
Warning: Keep mixture and treated carpet away from children and pets (due to borax content).
