A pet cemetery reopens and will expand

The animal cemetery of Prosnes (Marne) has been reopened since Thursday 5 January. It has recently changed owners: she is very involved with pets.

All about:
The 2022 Festival of Lights in Lyon

The North Cemetery of Reims (Marne) is well known. It houses the tombs of the famous Veuve Clicquot and Count Drouet d’Erlon, who gave his name to the nerve center of the City of Coronations.
There are other cemeteries in the agglomeration. And if they are less known, it cannot be said that they are not worth the detour.
Thus there is a unique cemetery of its kind in Champagne-Ardenne in the village of Prosnes (Marne), which we were already talking about in 2019. The Quiet Valley, intended for pets, has always just reopened its gates, from Thursday January 5, 2023 .

Converted former field, the place is 3,000m². There are a good hundred cellars, and provisions are underway to welcome new concessions (perpetual, as long as an annual fee is paid).
Note that the place is reserved for people who have lost their pet (and buried it here). The policy of the house (so to speak) is that it be a space of contemplation and intimacy, which cannot be compatible with the curiosity of third parties or with their simple “tourist” visit (even if devoid of any rancor).

“It was more of a slowdown in activity than a shutdown”, confides Amélie Viquiert, its new director, to France 3 Champagne-Ardenne. It’s no longer a Munier (named after the owner and founding couple), but Quiet Valley remains a family affair, as it’s their daughter-in-law (see below).

“My in-laws already had a job. The cemetery [ouvert en 1995; ndlr] it had to be secondary.” There have therefore been no more new entries recently, although “people always came to meditate and this remained maintained”. With the takeover it is no longer considered complete: an expansion by a further 6,000 m² is even possible.
Each license holder is given a network key. “They can come and pray night and day, that’s no problem.”

Of “from hamster to rabbit, through birds and reptiles, up to cats and three-four dogs”everything is possible as long as the animal weighs less than 40 kilos (it is not possible to go beyond this due to very strict laws). “It’s in the vault, not in the ground.” The standards are really draconian and enforce it (river runs right next door). “The simple cellar is at 390 euros, the triple at 1,170 euros.”
Graves may be marbled (Quiet Valley partners with an undertaker in Cormontreuil). They’re always decorated and flowery (see the heavily illustrated Facebook post below).

As for the coffins themselves (which must be paid for in addition to the vault), their price varies depending on their size and (optional) padding. “As far as we are concerned, there can be a small pillow and a blanket. A size XS – for new pets (Nac) such as rabbits – is 184.85 euros with the filling.” It costs less without. “For a large dog, we are at 286.41 euros, with padding.

Taking full-time care of this pet cemetery has become the main job of Amélie Viquiert, who is also a former sales team supervisor. “Change a little…” And there’s plenty to do: it doesn’t count its hours. Luckily, to support her, she can count on her spouse (who was already helping the parents a bit) “who has his own gardening business”.
Among the current projects: taking care of the vegetation “who grew up well”receive owners for new listings and collect their impressions, “their opinions about flowers, benches, other things; to satisfy them”. Not to mention the entire administrative floor.
“The parking lot has been redone, the gate will be changed, there will be new faucets and fixtures available…” Big news: a columbarium may soon be offered. It remains to fully develop it and set prices. The Quiet Valley is located at the exit of the village, between the field and the river, on the D235 road (see on the map below).

What to satisfy “all pet owners, and who can retreat to a place of their own, that they like”. The new manager indicates that she can be reached for any question or suggestion via the Facebook page or by mobile phone on 06 82 55 07 81.
